About two weeks ago I asked for your experience with tools. David Bächler then pointed me to the company . The product that could be the answer to my prayers (okay, I didn’t really pray for this) is . The tool might be an added bonus.

I am currently trying out DEVONthink Pro and it looks extremly promising. It’s basically a document collection application for Mac OS X. It allows you to either create text documents (RTF usually) or import existing documents. Everything gets indexed and is easily accessible. I’ll just comment on my original feature requirements list:

  • Lets me write articles and easily edit them as well: Done
  • Easy linking between articles Done
  • Basic formatting (bold, cursive, quotes, source code, lists, tables) Done
  • Can store uploaded documents and index their contents (PDF, ideally also the OpenOffice.org documents): Done (haven't tested OpenOffice.org import, though)
  • Very quick search: Done
  • Open source and/or open document format (I want no lock-in on my most valuable data)
No. This is currently the biggest issue. An export option is provided and I'll have to see if it really would allow me to switch applications in the future.

I'll now import my Knowiki (probably have to do that manually) and will see how it goes. I'll keep you posted.
