Just took a trip to the cafeteria of the school to grab a sandwich. This also gave me the opportunity to chat a bit with two students. One of the students said something that reminded my of the different expectations when learning Spanish versus Japanese. A short history. From December 2003 to May 2005 I spent six months in Japan as a short term missionary for OMF. Before flying to Japan I studied Japanese for two or three months at the Migros school in St. Gallen (about two hours every week). This gave me some basic grammar and vocabulary, so I was actually able to say “My name is Patrice” when I arrived in Japan. But that was about it. Then I spent six months there, and during that time studied Japanese using the Minna no Nihongo books. I didn’t get far but studied quite a few lessons of it. When I flew back I was very proud to be able to converse in basic Japanese with a travel group I met in Vienna airport. And they were impressed, too. For them it was not natural at all, that I spoke Japanese “so well”. And on a market in Hakodate I greeted some people in Japanese and they already said that my Japanese was good. So now I’m staying in Peru. Before arriving here I learned about three or four lessons with a book. It was more of a phrase book but a bit more advanced than the Kauderwelsch series (of which I also have the Peruvian edition). Then I studied for one month in Arequipa and now I’m able to converse quite well, though speaking goes a lot better than understanding. I was a bit surprised, but I definitely expected Spanish to go much better than Japanese. After all I already knew French and Spanish is a Latin language. But I was even more surprised by the attitude of the people. Most of them tell me that I’ll be able to speak Spanish “extremely well” after my six months here in Peru. I just hope they are right. ...

I’m currently investigating how to use Cfengine here at the Diego Thomson. It’s a tool to configure all hosts in a network centrally. Had I only known that tool before, when I was responsible for Linux servers. Well, from know on I’ll know it. There is a Tutorial and a Reference in case you’re interested.

Sometimes the network has to be reconfigured on the fly. Two examples when this might happen are a laptop on the move (plugging into a different network) or a local computer which had a bad network connection on booting up. Of course with Debian, reconfiguring the network is as easy as: # ifdown eth0 # ifup eth0 What's easier than that? Automated configuration. As a mac user I'm spoiled, as OS X always reconfigures the network automatically when I plug in my cable. That's what I wanted for Linux as well. So if there is already an existing solution, please tell me. But if there isn't, I have one for you now. First install the bash script network-status.sh somewhere on your computer (in /etc/network for example). Then execute the following command on boot: mii-tool --w eth0 | while read line; do /etc/network/network-status.sh $line; done How does this work? Well, mii-tool using the -w flag prints a line every time the link status changes. This line is then parsed by network-status.sh to run ifup or ifdown automatically. This was hacked together in the last few minutes, so expect bugs and reports them to me. Also, if there is already a better solution for that out there, please tell me. I'm sure that other people already had the same idea before me.

Hm, da es nach zwei Minuten Spiel bereits 1:0 für die Schweiz steht, scheinen es die lieben Schweizer Fussballer dieses mal tatsächlich zu schaffen. Reist die Schweiz nach Deutschland zur Weltmeisterschaft? Zum ersten mal tendiere ich zu einem Ja. Ich bin in ja in der Beziehung eher pessimistisch. Na schauen wir mal. Und ausgerechnet jetzt funktioniert bei mir das DRS 1 Webradio nicht. Dafür aber Sportal. Update 13:41: DRS 1 geht jetzt. Und Zuberbühler wird verantwortlich gemacht für das 1:1. Routine bei jedem Spiel momentan? (die Kritik meine ich) Update 14:17: Da kommt man nach einer halben Stunde aus der Andacht zurück und schon steht es 2:1. Also nein. Noch zwei Tore und die Schweiz ist wieder mal nicht qualifiziert. Update 14:30: Die Moderaten sind wütend auf den Schiedsrichter. 3:1 durch einen Penalty. Schweiz ist zwar noch qualifiziert, aber ein Tor mehr für die Türken und die Schweizer sind draussen. Update 15:03: Nach einem Spiel in dem er von den DRS-Moderatoren stark kritisiert wurde, hat Marco Streller nun ein Tor geschossen. 3:2 und die Schweiz scheint nun qualifiziert. Update 15:06: Hattrick für einen Türken und es steht 4:2. Noch 5 Minuten zittern. Update 15:43: Nachdem ich hier das ganze Büro auf den Kopf gestellt habe, komme ich nun dazu, hier den Sieg zu reportieren. Wir haben es geschafft. Ich bin nicht der grösste Fan des Schweizer Fussballs, aber gönnen mag ich es ihnen. ...

Duden bietet für das Office-Programm OpenOffice.org eine neue Rechtschreibeprüfung an. Das Produkt heisst Duden OpenOffice.org Suite und kostet 50 Euro. Erhältlich ist es für Windows und Linux. Leider habe ich mit Duden schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht. Ich habe mir vor ca. zwei Jahren die Duden Software für Linux gekauft (als Download). Es hat sich danach herausgestellt, dass diese (Achtung jetzt wird es technisch) nur auf Intel-Prozessoren, nicht aber auf PowerPC funktioniert. Da ich aber Debian auf meinem PowerBook installiert hatte, war eine Nutzung dadurch ausgeschlossen. Das hätte ich natürlich ahnen können. Trotzdem habe ich dann dem Support geschrieben, um nach einer PowerPC-Version zu fragen. Auf drei verschiedene Mails an fünf verschiedene Adressen kam nie eine Antwort. Ein einfaches “Nein, geht leider nicht” hätte mir eigentlich bereits gereicht. Anyway, ist trotzdem eine gute Sache dieses Duden-Produkt - wenn es denn funktioniert. (Via Golem.de) ...

The ABC language school in Arequipa prepared me very well for my work here. After one month there I was able to speak Spanish well enough and I’m impressed with that progress. But of course, one month is a very short time nonetheless. So I’m now looking for ways to improve my grammar knowledge. In order to do that I have ordered two books at Amazon: ¡Búscalo! and Spanish Grammar for Independent Learners. I’ll report about them when they have arrived here - approximately mid-December. I also ordered Columbo series two and three together with the books. Maybe they also have Spanish translations included (the first season DVD does). But that was not the reason for ordering the DVD’s… ...

Da kriegt man doch mal was für seine Steuergelder. DRS zeigt sich äusserst innovativ und bietet sehr viele RSS und Podcast-Feeds an. Dass die Sendung Echo der Zeit als Podcast zur Verfügung steht wusste ich. Aber da gibt es offenbar noch weitere Sendungen, welche so in regelmässigen Abständen heruntergeladen werden können. Jetzt sollte SF DRS nachziehen und die Tagesschau nicht nur als Realvideo sondern auch als Videocast anbieten. Dann könnte ich die auf den Laptop runterladen und zu Hause offline anschauen. Die Tagesschau aus Deutschland gibt es seit einiger Zeit als Podcast (MP3) und seit kurzem auch als Video-Podcast. Super Sache! ...

Gerade auf drs.ch vorbeigesurft, weil ich ein wenig Radio hören wollte. Da wird ein Artikel wie folgt angeteasert: Das Bild links, bzw. dessen Untertitel, gefällt mir ja besonders gut: “Alle ans Netz”. Dazu musste aber ein USB-Stecker dienen. Nun klar ist das technisch nicht falsch, da es ja Modems oder auch WLAN-Adapter gibt, welche sich per USB verbinden und von daher über USB durchaus eine Netzwerkverbindung möglich ist. Aber ein RJ-45 Stecker wäre doch da einiges sexier gewesen, oder? ;-) ...
