Gestern ist Alberto Fujimori, der letzte Präsident von Peru, in Chile gelandet und einige Stunden später wurde er festgenommen. Fujimori verliess durch einen Regierungsskandal während seiner zweiten Regierungszeit das Land in Richtung Japan. Gegen Fujimori sind seit einiger Zeit internationale Haftbefehle ausgestellt. Da er aber zusätzlich zur peruanischen Staatsbürgerschaft auch den japanischen Pass besitzt, hat sich Japan geweigert Fujimori auszuliefern. Vor einigen Wochen hat sich Fujimori offiziell wieder zur nächsten Präsidentschaftswahl aufgestellt. Seine Chancen werden als recht hoch eingestuft und würde er gewählt, wäre er wieder immun und könnte strafrechtlich nicht belangt werden. Nun ist er mitten in Spannungen zwischen Peru und Chile in Chile gelandet. Da wurde er nach entsprechenden Bitten von Peru dann auch festgenommen. Bin ja mal gespannt, wie es weiter geht. ...

I reported last week about a veeery strange network problem here (See post 1 & post 2). Friday morning, before everbody arrived, I replaced one of the 3cSOHO100-TX Hurricane network cards with a D-Link one we had lying around. That interface then worked without any problems. I digged some more but could not find a solution. Though I could confirm that the problem was not around with Linux kernel 2.4.x but only with 2.6.x. So I had two options: downgrading the kernel or replacing the cards. The most pragmatic solution was to replace the network cards and I did so in the evening after school was over. Some tests showed that the problem was indeed solved. Today, Monday, I looked at the MRTG statistics and saw that the problem was indeed solved. ...

Now that I’m talking a lot in Spanish (and I do have lots of opportunities at my job), I’m getting more and more confused by the english word “todo” or rather “to-do”. I always put those words together and I’m not alone in that habit. But unfortunately there is also a word “todo” in Spanish which means an completely different thing - it’s translated with “all” or “every”. So currently every time I read that word in English I have to think twice before realizing what it means. ...

Peru is part in another border dispute, this time with Chile. Peru's Congress has passed a bill to redraw its sea border with Chile, deepening a diplomatic row between the two Latin American nations. The bill, backed in a 98-0 vote, grants Peru control of 37,900 square km rich fishing waters in the Pacific Ocean. Chile - which currently controls the area - says the legislation violates treaties signed in the 1950s. There was a war about the border to Ecuador in 1995, called the Cenepa war.

Continuing the saga of our network problem. Juan and I have tested transferring between our computers. That worked very well, so we concluded that the problem must lie with the server. I have now been able to find another user having problems with the network card we use (3Com Corporation 3cSOHO100-TX Hurricane). Don’t have the solution yet, but at least that looks like I’ve finally found the problem. ...

I’m currently trying to find the solution to a network problem here at the Diego Thomson. We have a Linux server (running Linex) and a heterogeneous network with MS Windows and Linux clients (plus my lonely Mac OS X). Now there were reports that when students from a computing room (20 computers max) log in all at the same time, things get really slow. My first impression was, that we ought to by a Gigabit network card for the server instead of the 100 Megabit one. But when I started to debug the problem things became very strange very quickly. My working times are probably going to be quite to my liking. The school is in the afternoons. So I started work today at 13:30 today and now at 21:05 I’m still at work. But I guess in the future I’ll start work at late mornings. I have talked a little with Juan here at the institute about the work I’m planning to do. We have planned what I’ll be able to do in the beginning. So Wednesday I’ll probably start doing some real work here. Tomorrow, Tuesday is a free day. In the meantime I’ve had a first look at the online Linux courses of the Diego Thomson. Will help me in learning technical Spanish. ...

I have safely arrived in Lima yesterday. Today I’m starting my work here at the Diego Thomson. Saying good-byes was hard in Arequipa and I’ll miss some of the people (mostly “my family” and friends from school). But knowing myself I guess I’ll integrate easily here and feel right at home after a few days. At least I hope that will be true again. Hasta luego.

This Saturday we drove to Mollendo by bus. The roundtrip cost 12 Soles (4.5 Swiss franks). Considering that the trip took about 2.5 hours one way, that’s not exactly expensive. Anyway, once in Mollendo we took a taxi to Mejía. There we embarked on a walk back to Mollendo along the beach. Along the way we saw many small crabs (pictures will follow this week on Flickr). Also we had a good time together. Today we’ll probably go eating guinea pigs for our first times. I hope it tastes better than the one my father got in Ecuador. Many Peruvians like guinea pigs very much. ...

Bei meiner Reise nach Peru habe ich einige Elemente von OS X neu zu schätzen gelernt. Drei Beispiele: iCal, Sprachen und das Dashboard. iCal, die Kalender-Software von Apple, kann sehr gut mit Zeitzonen umgehen. Oben rechts im Fenster kann ich die verschiedenen Zeitzonen definieren. Danach ist es möglich, Kalendereinträge in verschiedenen Zeitzonen anzulegen und die Zeit wird dann korrekt in die jeweils aktuelle Zeitzone umgerechnet. Als ich meinen PC von Europa/Zürich auf América/Lima umstellte, hat iCal beim ersten Start gleich nachgefragt, ob da die iCal Zeitzone auch umgestellt werden soll. Sprachen sind auch sehr hübsch. Falls installiert, ist es möglich, praktisch on-the-fly die Systemsprache zu ändern. Nachdem die Einstellung in den Systemeinstellungen geändert wurde, verwendet jedes neu gestartete Programm die neue Sprache. Der Finder (mit Desktop, etc.) ändert die Sprache nach einem Login. Das ist aus verschiedenen Gründen sehr praktisch. Erstens habe ich mein System jetzt auf Spanisch gestellt um mich schneller an die Sprache zu gewöhnen und auch um die Computer-Ausdrücke zu lernen. Dann wollte der Typ im Internet-Café einige Netzwerk-Einstellungen vornehmen (ja, ich kann da jetzt meinen Laptop verwenden!). Dies viel ihm einiges leichter mit spanischen Begriffen. Und schliesslich ist es praktisch, die Sprache ändern zu können, wenn ein ausländischer Freund etwas am Computer erledigen soll. Oder umgekehrt: als ein Freund und ich in Japan mal die Apple Präsentations-Software Keynote austesten wollten, haben wir die Sprache von Japanisch auf Englisch geschaltet und konnten so etwas mit Keynote anfangen. Und dann noch das Dashboard. Heute standen im Internet-Café wieder mal drei Leute um mich rum, weil sie mein PowerBook so schön, super, famos und so weiter fanden. Da hat jemand nach dem Preis gefragt, den ich natürlich nur in Schweizer Franken wusste. Um das in eine bekanntere Währung umzurechnen habe ich dann erstmal finance.yahoo.com als Adresse eingegeben, bis mir dann einviel, dass ich ja im Dashboard einen Währungsrechner habe. Der hat nur den Nachteil, dass die Währung Nuevo Sol nicht zur Verfügung steht. US Dollar reicht aber meistens. Und was ich im Dashboard auch noch habe sind drei Uhren in den verschiedenen für mich relevanten Zeitzonen: Lima, Zürich und Tokyo. Sehr praktisch für einen kurzen Check, ob ich auf eine Mail oder SMS gleich eine Antwort erwarten kann oder nicht. Und natürlich für Telefonate sowieso. Ach ja, wenn jemand eine gute Software sucht um Vokabeln zu lernen: iFlash erledigt die Aufgabe sehr gut. Ursprünglich vermisste ich es, dass es bei der Abfrage von Vokabeln die Sprache nicht automatisch wechseln kann. Was ich wollte war, dass die ersten beide male von Spanisch auf Deutsch abgefragt würde (da einfacher) und danach von Deutsch auf Spanisch (da schwieriger). Mittlerweile vermisse ich das nicht mehr, ich lasse immer Deutsch auf Spanisch abfragen. ...
